A home solar system in South Africa costs from about R55,000 for a small grid-tied system with little or no battery to R250,000 or more for a large home with substantial battery storage. Most households land between R75,000 and R200,000, depending on inverter size, battery capacity, panel count and roof complexity. Because prices for the same home can differ by tens of thousands of rand between installers, comparing several itemised quotes is the most reliable way to find a fair price. See our 2026 Solar Price Guide.
A 5kW hybrid system with a lithium battery typically costs between R75,000 and R160,000 installed in 2026. Entry-level packages with an 8kWh battery start at around R75,000 to R90,000, while systems with premium brands or larger batteries run from about R110,000 to R160,000. The battery is the biggest variable, so check the usable kWh and warranty on every quote.
Yes, Green Quotes is completely free for homeowners and businesses, with no obligation to accept any quote. You pay nothing to us whether or not you go ahead, and the installer you choose bills you directly for the installation.
Before an installer can receive quote requests, we check their PV GreenCard certification, their SAPVIA membership, and their qualifications and experience. The PV GreenCard is the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association's (SAPVIA) quality programme, which confirms that an installer has been trained and assessed on safe, compliant solar installation. You can also view each matched installer's profile, services and past work before deciding.
You will receive up to 6 quotes from verified installers who service your area. We review every request before it goes out, and most customers hear from their first installers within 24 hours. The exact number depends on how many approved installers cover your suburb and system type.
A proper solar quote itemises everything you are paying for, so you can compare like for like: the inverter brand, model and kW rating; the battery brand and usable kWh; the panel brand, wattage and quantity; mounting, cabling and protection equipment; labour, with VAT shown clearly; the electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC); registration of the system with Eskom or your municipality; and product and workmanship warranties, with an expected installation date. Be cautious of a one-line quote with a single total.
Yes. Any grid-connected solar system of 100kW or less must be registered with your electricity distributor, which is either Eskom or your municipality. This applies whether or not you export power to the grid, and only fully off-grid systems with no grid connection are exempt. If Eskom supplies you directly, registration-related charges are waived for systems up to 50kVA until further notice. If your municipality supplies you (for example the City of Cape Town, City Power or Tshwane), its own process and fees apply. Ask your installer to include registration and the electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC) in your quote.
Look for a local installer who holds a PV GreenCard, is a SAPVIA member, issues a Certificate of Compliance and can show recent installations in your area. Compare at least three itemised quotes, check warranties, and ask who handles municipal or Eskom registration. Green Quotes does the shortlisting for you: submit one request and up to 6 vetted installers who service your suburb will quote.
